Traditional jobs for Amish men used to be farming, woodworking, harness making, blacksmithing, and buggy making/repairing. Now many Amish men are involved in a variety of occupations. Some make windows. Some are roofers, carpenters, painters, or masons. Some own general stores, bike shops, book stores, window and fencing stores, or health food stores. Some work at lumber stores, hardware stores, outdoor furniture stores, trailer factories, and a variety of other places.

What is the most unusual job you know of an Amish man doing?

I know of Amish man being a school teacher. And you are right Wanda they have jobs that take them outside of the community. I know where several of the Amish men work in construction and have a crew and work for English man daily 7 to 5 .

Yes, you're right, Missy. At one schoolhouse we visited a few years ago the teacher was a young Amish man who didn't look much older than his students. And we know several Amish men who work at the RV factories in Indiana. Things are changing for the Amish when it comes to their jobs.

I know my old Amish nieghbors used to work in a hospital as helpers, aides, or cleaners, in Middlefield, Ohio. I was really surprised to hear that they worked in a hospital and really enjoyed it!  This was before they were married and had children.

An Amish man we know in Marion, Kentucky said he had worked in a hospital for a time, too.
