I was caught by surprise when one of my readers told me that her father had been abandoned by his parents and raised by an Amish family. Since abandonment can leave a child with emotional scars, I decided to create a novel with a similar theme. Then, when a young Amish girl sent me her recipe for White Christmas Pie, it fit perfectly with the Christmas theme of my storyline. Since Indiana is one of our favorite places to visit, it also seemed fitting to set the story there.
